Earlier this year What Car? announced their cars of the year for 2019 and the overall winner of the Best Small Car category was the Volkswagen Polo.
More specifically, it was the VW Polo 1.0 TSI 95 SE that scooped the award, with What Car? commenting that it’s ‘the best small car you can buy, particularly when specified with Volkswagen’s 1.0-litre petrol engine, which is punchy from low revs, eager to spin up to its redline and remarkably efficient in the real world.’
More than 14 million Polos have been sold in the UK since it was first produced in 1975. It’s the company’s second biggest seller, after the Golf. According to the Express newspaper it has a sophisticated interior, advanced safety features, improved efficiency, good road handling and strong build quality. And the Telegraph gave it 10/10 for comfort, 10/10 for space, 9/10 for ease of driving, 8/10 for fuel economy and 8/10 for affordability.
What Car? also rated the Dacia Sandero 0.9 TCe 90 Essential as the best small car under £12,000 and the Audi A1 Sportback 30 TFSI Sport as the best small car for those with a budget of over £20,000. They commented that the Sandero ‘is a staggering amount of car for your money, but its cost-cutting demands compromises’ and that the Audi A1 is ‘a fine all-rounder but it doesn’t really do anything better than the Polo despite carrying a hefty price premium.’
